For the viewers who are asking/commenting about why the kids were important and why the kids went through such hell. I promise that it does have a point and this is exactly how the books made almost every reader feel. The books compelled readers to venture on and to ask similar questions. Once you finished the last page in the third novel, things become clear and the intent was understood. Based on interviews with the writer - he did certain things in the book (which they clearly translated in the movie) to make sure viewers felt confused and almost like they were thrown into the maze with Thomas. You learn everything as the main character learns everything and as time goes on the answers to the questions start to formulate. This is one of my favorite book series and I'm so happy that it doesn't have a lot of romance involved. Instead you're focused on the problems of these kids and the hell they are forced to endure for some unknown reason. Loved this movie and honestly it was on point and exceeded my expectations for a book to film adaptation.

Idk how people are saying this was hard to follow or didn't make sense. It was easy to follow and even if you have a hard time following it they explain everything that is going on in the end. Only one thing you have to figure out that was faked or misleading at the end but its not hard to figure out what's coming next.. Good movie

I guess I'll have to go and read the books now. This movie was just simply amazing. It had my attention right from start to finish, and it leaves me wanting more. Very nice, and I completely agree that I'm glad they kept the romance out of this story. Gave it a nice unique edge.

Another teen novel turned movie. Not bad at all but nothing incredibly profound. Think Enders Game, I am Number Four, The Hunger Games, Percey Jackson etc...

It was just ok for me, not as good I was expecting. A decent-ish one time watch though. 6/10

So, what was the point of all that? This story would have been enjoyable if the reason for what happened to these kids was made clear. As it stands, these mysterious events they were subjected to seem pointless because the plot was inconclusive. Yes, we were told there was a reason, but not what it is. Yes, we were told they are terribly valuable, but not why. Yes, they are going to do something now, but what? No clue, which unfortunately hasn't left me curious enough to care if the point is revealed in the next movie; a cliffhanger only builds anticipation if enough of the plot is illuminated to understand why events are taking place, that makes finding out what happens next tantalizing. This was just annoying. 3/10 for great acting and special-FX.

I've noticed that negative reviews of this film tend to be voted down, and I don't think that's really fair; someone coming to watch this ought to get a fair idea of what everyone thought, not just the people who enjoyed it. With that in mind, I would like to ask that this review be given the benefit of the doubt and not shot down immediately because it's negative. It isn't meant as a complaint or hate-fest but rather to give my personal opinion, which might be helpful to someone else reading this if they have similar tastes. Personally, I thought it was awful, but that may have to do with the fact that I'm probably far above the age of the average person watching this, and I'm also a medical scientist. To me it felt like something written by a high-schooler that features a high-schooler's perception of "some horrible thing." Films about "evil and unethical secret scientific experiments" are always idiotic in that they never even try to go beyond the writer's juvenile perception of what science must be like. At least try to work in a scientific environment for a while, or a medical setting, to see how the community actually functions, if you were going to try to pass off a presumably convincing depiction of what unethical science must be like. Also, these films consistently feature a community where the majority are inhumanly indifferent to horrific behavior which the average person would have found mortifying, where supposedly only the main character actually finds it horrifying-- except that the average viewer will find it horrifying, too. It just isn't convincing as a film that the in-film community would act that way. Then you have this two-dimensional character everyone is 'meant to hate,' without complexity or duality, just 'he's bad.' Oh, I think maybe my "favorite" part was when there were these MRI or CT brain scans on the monitor, and one of the boys says "they are watching us!" - as though an MRI or CT of someone's brain can be done remotely. And as if finding a cure to a virus would require studies of brain activity (more like immune levels). It really feels like whoever wrote this story didn't even bother to do the tiniest, most minuscule bit of actual research into their writing before spewing this story out. It wouldn't have been rocket science to look up, someone at a high school level science course could have found out this information. Maybe if I was in high school I would have found this to be cool, but all the reviews about how this story is presumably intelligent or ground-breaking are way off the mark as to give a fair average impression of the movie.

Wasn't expecting much but better acting than expected, especially given the cast is so young. Great concept with mysterious layers, taut pacing, all action. A total escape that sets up a sequel. Major drawback for me was an emotional manipulation scene toward the climax, (adolescent appeal, I guess, but I hate it when filmmakers take that route, it's so formulaic). I liked the overall concept, tho. Sci Fi fans will appreciate. Worth one watch.

Helluva great movie, bet the books give more insight to all of this as well tho, but i must comment Dylan O'Brien's acting: he is to be one of VERY few good actors in this time to come, he is one of the greater actors i have seen in a long time :) He lives the whole part of what he is cast to do and i dunnot think that any other would have fitted this role better, he has such energy and feelings, passion that he lays out for the roles that he does, he is actually amazing :) And darn so cute to lol :D A really good movie, looking forward to number 2 ;)
